About $76 gets a rental most of the way to dark academia: two quarts of dark green paint for one wall, a velvet cushion cover, a black frame and a box of tapers, with a warm bulb in a lamp you already own, the ceiling light off, and the books you already have. The leather wingback and the carved desk are the expensive half of the trend.
What the trend is, in one paragraph
The look is a university library in a novel: dark wood, spines out, candles. Wikipedia dates the aesthetic to Tumblr around 2014, spreading through Instagram and Pinterest and then TikTok, and names Donna Tartt’s 1992 novel The Secret History as its usual source text. Real Homes ran the decor version in October 2023 with a palette from interior consultant Jade Lafleche: “deep greens, browns, burgundy, and navy,” plus “vintage furniture like leather armchairs and wooden bookshelves.” Livingetc revisited it this March and quoted designer Christine Gachot: “Lighting cannot be overstated… Layers are the key at all three levels.” She also lists the textiles, “cut velvets, lived-in leather, and fine woven wool.”
In 1stDibs’ November 2025 survey of 468 designers, chocolate brown was the top color for 2026 at 33% and burgundy went from 7% to 21%. The release says dark green grew too, without a number. Maximalism was the most requested style at 39%.
Turn the ceiling light off before you buy anything
This costs nothing. A ceiling fixture lights the whole room evenly and the corners never go dark. Switch it off. Put a 2700K bulb in whatever table lamp you own, and move the lamp to desk or side-table height, below your eye line when you’re sitting. That’s Gachot’s bottom layer.
The lamp everyone pictures is the green-glass banker’s lamp. New, from a seller Walmart itself ships, the Catalina version is $103.20 (priced September 5, 2026). The cheaper listings on the same page are marketplace sellers, and the ones under $60 were out of stock. If you want that exact lamp, look for it secondhand, and the magnet test from the thrift guide tells you whether the base is brass or plated steel.
One dark wall, about $39
Paint is the biggest change per dollar in this trend, and the one most leases restrict. Pick the wall the lamp will sit against. One wall only. Walmart sells Glidden’s High Endurance Plus in a color called Pine Forest, flat finish, $19.47 a quart, sold and shipped by Walmart. Glidden rates it at 100 square feet a quart. An 8-foot ceiling and a 10-foot wall is 80 square feet. A dark color over a light wall takes two coats, which is 160 square feet of coverage, so two quarts, $38.94. Buy them one at a time; the FAQ below has the test square. Flat hides roller marks and drywall patches, and any sheen on a dark wall shows both. Eggshell is $21.47 a quart if the wall gets touched a lot.

If your lease says no paint, the renter wallpaper guide has the flat-paint test to run first and the roll math for one wall. A dark green or deep brown peel-and-stick gets you the same backdrop. Or paint nothing and put a dark bookcase on the wall instead.
The bookcase, if you’re buying one
IKEA’s BILLY in dark-brown oak effect is 31½ inches wide, 11 deep and 79½ tall, $89 list; it was on sale for $69 on September 5 with no end date shown, and the table below uses the list price. Four adjustable shelves, rated by IKEA at 66 pounds each, in a printed wood-grain foil over fiberboard.
Fill it the way the bookshelf wealth article says, nearly edge to edge with books you’ve read. The one change for this trend: take the paper jackets off the hardcovers with dark cloth bindings, because a row of navy and oxblood cloth is the look and the jackets are mostly white. Keep jackets on anything with a pale binding. Paperbacks go in, spines out, no color sorting, and the shelves get filled. Blalock’s rooms in the bookshelf wealth piece have one or two objects per case, and that’s enough here too. Lit candles never go on the shelves; they go on the table, a foot from the books.
Four small things, priced
A velvet cushion cover, $9.99
IKEA’s SANELA in dark green is cotton velvet, 20 by 20 inches, and fits a 19⅝-inch inner cushion that is sold separately. One on a sofa or a reading chair is enough. The dark-brown SANELA is the same price if the wall is already green. IKEA’s dark green SANELA curtains aren’t on the US site any more, so the cushion is the velvet.
A black frame, $11.99
IKEA’s FISKBO in 16 by 20 is fiberboard with a plastic front, no mat, hangs either way. With no mat, whatever goes in needs to be close to 16 by 20 or the backing board shows around it: a folded map opened flat, a poster-size botanical print, a page from an oversize atlas, or a sheet of dark handmade paper with nothing on it. The print is yours to find and isn’t in the cost table. If you don’t own anything that size, the 8 by 10 FISKBO is $3.99, and a 5 by 7 print centered in it leaves an inch and a half of backing board on every side. Lean it on the bookcase or the floor.
Twenty tapers, $14.99
IKEA’s JUBLA chandelier candles are 7½ inches, ¾-inch diameter, unscented, six hours each. Two a night, two nights a week, is five weeks from the box. Holders come from the thrift store, and prices vary by shop. Take one JUBLA with you and try it in the cup; cup sizes vary, and a ¾-inch taper wobbles in a wide one. Lit candles sit on the table, 12 inches from anything that burns, including the books. That’s the NFPA candle rule from the Scandinavian Christmas article.
A wool or plaid throw, thrifted
Gachot’s “fine woven wool” is the expensive textile in the list new. Secondhand prices vary by shop, so there’s no number here. A tartan or a plain dark wool over the chair arm is the last layer. Check the tag for wool or a wool blend; fleece is the wrong texture for this.
What to skip
Latin-quote wall art and the “dark academia” print packs. Put a real map or a real botanical in the frame instead.
Sets of matching fake leather books sold as decor. The Cambridge Dictionary’s new-words blog defined the neighboring bookshelf-wealth trend to exclude them, and they are the first thing a visitor pulls off the shelf.
Painting the ceiling. The library rooms this copies have ten- and twelve-foot ceilings, and a dark ceiling on an 8-foot room reads lower still. Leave it white.

Dark academia FAQ
Does it work in a room with white walls and no dark wall? At night, yes. With white walls the lamp, the bookcase and the textiles carry it after dark, and in daylight the room is a white room with a lot of books. Paint the wall if you want it to show at noon.
Is dark academia the same as bookshelf wealth? No. They share the shelves, and bookshelf wealth is photographed in daylight with the room bright. Dark academia is the same shelves at night with the wall painted.
Which green? Darker than you’d pick from a chip. Lafleche’s list is deep green, brown, burgundy and navy. Pick from the end of each that sits next to black. Buy one quart, paint a two-foot square on the wall you chose, and look at it at night with the lamp on. Then buy the second quart, or a different color.
Can I do this in a bedroom? Yes, and it’s the easiest room for it because bedrooms already run on lamps. Skip the candles in there. Paint the wall behind the headboard, put the cushion on the bed and lean the frame on the nightstand.
